In an op-Ed for the Post & Courier, Charles Mann emphasized the impact the negative ruling in Alexander v. SCNAACP will have on South Carolinians. In a 6-3 opinion, the Supreme Court ruled that state lawmakers can rig voting maps that discriminate and "diminish the collective voting power" of Black voters. At SC Counts, that redistricting, civic engagement, and voting all work together to make our Democracy work--- any attempt to prevent the system from working equitably impacts all of us.
"The accelerated pace at which our voting and civil rights have been targeted and eroded across the South is something every American — regardless of political leaning, race or where they live — should be worried about."
Even with this setback, Charles writes that we must continue organizing and our next best chance to use our voice is in the November 2024 general election.
We agree with Charles, "Despite these calculated attempts to silence our voices, we count."
